Arts and culture offer an astonishing variety of choices for the holiday gift-shopper in McMinnville, nearly all of which may be found in our festive downtown. Here are a few recommendations for nurturing imaginations and shopping local this season. Art Galleries: The wonderful thing about shopping for art at shops like Currents Gallery, the Gallery at Ten Oaks, MECA and Marilyn Affolter Art Gallery is that, more likely than not, you’re supporting local artists. Also, some offer classes in painting, drawing, etc. The Merri Artist: If an artist or other creatively-minded loved one is on your list, this local shop is essential. They carry an astonishing variety of art supplies for virtually all media and skill sets. Also, the book selection has some great options for artists-in-training. Hopscotch Toys & Games: Nurture the young artist in your life! Children are artistically inclined by nature, and you’ll find some great, affordable kits and supplies at this locally-owned shop. Melissa & Doug make high-quality products for kids, and you can buy them right here. Gallery Theater: Ticket packages for live theater isn’t just a wonderfully outside-the-box holiday gift; it also is a wise move, given that some of the theater’s shows sell out fast once they open. Move to the head of the line this season. Pacific Frame & Gallery: Nothing makes a great picture greater than a beautiful frame. Noel and Leigh Ann Jones are your local experts if you’re new at this. Holiday Markets: Two are coming up fast: Durant Vineyards will feature work by the Barn Swallow Artists from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 14-15, at their Red Ridge Farms Tasting Room. Also, on Saturday only: Vineyard Heights will hold a holiday bazaar 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the assisted living facility, on S.W. Hill Road. Art Walk: 3rd Friday on 3rd Street is coming up! There’s no better time to enjoy the festivity of downtown McMinnville than 4-8 p.m. on the third Friday of each month. Wine tasters may check in at McMenamins Hotel Oregon. Ten bucks covers five tasting tickets, a commemorative glass, a wine bag and a map. David Bates is a McMinnville writer who has appeared in Gallery Theater productions since 1998.
