It’s a rare opportunity to get an inside look at historic homes and buildings in the community that you’re visiting.  But this spring, that is about to change.  McMinnville and the surrounding Yamhill County area are home to an incredible inventory of historic properties, many of which remain unseen by the public. The inaugural Solid Foundations Tour is an exciting new event that offers exclusive access to some of the most stunning architectural gems in Oregon wine country, and tickets are already on sale.

The Inspiration Behind the Tour

In 2022, McMinnville local Lee McCollins joined CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and took their first case, eager to contribute to the program. However, they quickly realized that their professional commitments made it difficult to dedicate themselves fully as an advocate, so they decided to support CASA in a different way—by joining the board.

At Lee’s first board meeting, they were shown the annual budget and they realized that while this incredible organization does essential work, more funds are needed to better support the staff and the CASA kids. Many local grant funding had been exhausted, so they needed to find other creative ways to support CASA. That’s when Lee was struck by a new idea.  Having recently attended the Historic Interior Home Tour hosted by the Albany Visitors Association, Lee thought that McMinnville was due for a similar opportunity.

The ballroom nestled within this Elks Lodge urban apartment is dazzling.

What to Expect on the Solid Foundations Tour

Aside from raising money for CASA, the goal of the Solid Foundations Tour is to highlight historic homes, barns, and unique buildings throughout Yamhill County, focusing on a different Yamhill County community each year. In 2025, it’s kicking off in McMinnville!

This year’s tour features four McMinnville properties, including an urban apartment and a historic theater. The highlight of the tour is the iconic Mack Theater, which remains in the same state as when it closed in the early 2000s, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the past before restoration efforts begin.

Why Support CASA?

CASA plays a critical role in advocating for children in the foster care system. As a conduit between the child, legal guardians, DHS, and the courts, CASA volunteers have special access to medical and school records to ensure each child’s best interests are prioritized. Their ultimate goal is to find a permanent, stable home for these children. Unlike any other party involved in these cases, CASA volunteers are solely focused on the child’s well-being. Their work is essential but requires funding to sustain and grow the program.
