Linfield University has its origins in Oregon City College, but it wasn’t officially chartered until January 30, 1858, as the Baptist College at McMinnville by the Oregon Territorial Legislature. It was later renamed McMinnville College. In its early years, the institution also functioned as a secondary school for McMinnville and didn’t confer its first baccalaureate degree until 1884.

The college faced significant challenges in its early years, however, its future took a positive turn in 1922 when Frances Ross Linfield donated her Spokane, Washington properties to the college. In gratitude for the over $250,000 received from the land sale, the trustees renamed the college to honor her late husband, the Rev. George Fisher Linfield. While Linfield University retains its American Baptist heritage, it operates with a commitment to inclusivity, with no religious requirements for faculty, students, or staff.

Today, Linfield University is an independent nonprofit institution renowned for its exceptional faculty, excellent science programs, collaborative learning environment, and unique international focus.
